Can CBD Ease Diabetic Complications?

CBD has been pushed as a treatment for an array of medical conditions. Discerning between facts and marketing schemes can be challenging, especially for the casual CBD user. Most people don’t have time to review scientific papers and evaluate our studies regarding cannabis. Treating the complications caused by diabetes with CBD hasn’t been given adequate attention. However, we can make an effort to understand CBD’s potential if we are knowledgeable about the side effects caused by diabetes.

We’re going to cover CBD’s potential to ease diabetic complications by understanding the condition and the available research. We’re far from doctors prescribing CBD to treat these complications, but CBD could get FDA approval for treatments other than epilepsy in the future.

Types of Diabetes

The four most common forms of diabetes are Type 1, Type 2, pre-diabetes, and gestational. All forms are severe health conditions affecting over 10% of Americans. The US has a particularly high rate of diabetes because of the unprecedented obesity problem. Each type has different root causes; it’s essential to understand these causes and the side effects when looking for CBD to ease the complications.

Causes of Diabetes

The two prominent forms of diabetes are Type 1 and Type 2, differ in that Type 1 is a genetic disorder that shows up early in life. Type 2 is caused by a poor diet and is diagnosed later on. People with Type 1 diabetes have an immune system that attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in their pancreas.

Diabetes Complications and CBD

The most promising use for CBD in the fight against digests exists in people with Type 2. People suffering from the condition are at a high risk of poor circulation. High glucose levels cause fatty deposits to build up inside blood vessels, limiting blood flow.

While we haven’t done any widespread human trials, some studies suggest CBD use can increase blood flow in the brain. So, in theory, if someone has Type 2 diabetes, they will have limited blood flow, and CBD could combat the complication. Multiple studies have been done on mice that support CBD potential to increase blood flow, along with a small study on human participants.

A randomized controlled study with 15 healthy adults found that after a 600mg dose, blood flow was increased to the hippocampus. The leading researcher, Dr. Bloomfield, concluded, “to our knowledge, this is the first study to find that CBD increases blood flow to key regions involved in memory processing, particularly the hippocampus. This supports the view that CBD has region-specific blood flow effects in the human brain, which has previously been disputed.”

While the study is promising, it doesn’t prove that CBD is a viable treatment for complications caused by Type 2 diabetes. The study will likely lead to more research regarding diabetes or other conditions that cause or are caused by a lack of blood flow to the brain.
