CBD for Panic Attacks

Using CBD oil for panic attacks

Anxiety and panic attacks are among the most common and most unpleasant issues that many peoples have to deal on a daily basis. While some feel confident and relaxed everywhere they go, in others even the smallest inconvenience or trouble may trigger panic attack. This is not a new problem, however, scientists always look for new approaches to the management of anxiety. One of such relatively new approaches is using cannabidiol to manage panic attacks.

What is cannabidiol?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of the many cannabinoids that hemp plant naturally contains. Unlike its famous brother THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), it doesn’t product a high. Although more research is needed to determine medical uses and safety of cannabidiol, there’re studies that show promising results for CBD in management of pain, inflammation and anxiety. Importantly, World Health Organisation admitted safety of cannabidiol. CBD is well tolerated and not commonly associated with severe side effects even when taken in large amounts.

How does CBD affect anxiety?

One of the most interesting things about CBD is that, as opposed to THC, it is associated with calming and relaxing effect. It has been noticed that CBD can even counteract the psychotic effects of THC. Anxiolytic effects of CBD are still being investigated, and there’re studies that show improvement in individuals with phobic disorders after a few weeks of CBD oil regular intake.

Now, what exactly happens when you take CBD for panic attacks? Cannabidiol interacts with the cannabinoid type 1 and other receptors in the human brain that control anxiety provoking behaviour.

How much CBD should I take for panic attacks?

Study shows that the anxiolytic effect of CBD is most notable if cannabidiol is taken in moderate but not higher dosis. “Start low and go slow” is the technique recommended for every CBD beginner. Starting with low dosage and taking about three days to observe the effects, and then adding up to see how the body reacts is a common practice for CBD users. Starting your personal CBD diary and taking daily notes is always a great idea. To see our CBD Dosage Guide, click here.

It is unlikely that taking CBD while already feeling anxious will have major effect. It takes some time for CBD to build up in the body, and with anxiety, consistency is the key. Gradual increase and finding the right dosage is the recommended strategy aimed at prevention of panic attacks from happening rather than blocking an ongoing panic attack.

The two most common forms of CBD that people use to manage anxiety are CBD oil and CBD capsules. CBD oil can be great for those who are still looking for the right dosage as it gives enough flexibility in adjusting the amount of intake. The capsules are perfect for those who already know how much CBD is needed for the optimal effect, and want to get the same amount every time they take their CBD. Some brands offer blends specifically formulated to help manage stress and anxiety. Besides CBD, they normally include natural ingredients know for their calming effects, such as, for example, chamomile, valerian root or rhodiola.

Can CBD cause panic attacks?

While this is highly unlikely that cannabidiol itself can lead to a panic attack, such an effect can be caused by THC. The phenomena of cannabis-caused anxiety is almost always associated with psychotic effects of THC rather than with other cannabinoids intake. In some people, even full spectrum CBD that consists as little as 0.3% of THC, may cause increase in anxiety. In this case, it is recommended to switch to broad spectrum or isolate formulations. It is also very important to always check any product for lab tests to make sure you won’t be getting any undesired effects from the purchased product.
