Does CBD make you sleepy? CBD’s effect on energy

Does hemp oil make you sleepy? In the case of pure hemp seed oil (that does not contain Cannabidiol), the answer is a simple no. Neither does hemp oil make you tired when oil does contain CBD. At least, not when taken in low doses.

Sadly, some people avoid using CBD therapeutics due to a misconception that Cannabidiol will make them drowsy. Here, we’ll, therefore, look at what you need to know about how CBD affects sleep and waking energy levels.

Does CBD Oil Make You Sleepy?

Because hemp is a member of the cannabis family, many people assume that Cannabidiol will make them drowsy. However, neither Cannabidiol (CBD) or hemp oil contain the psychoactive cannabinoid Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This is important, as it is THC that induces fatigue and sleepiness when using regular cannabis.

  • By law, hemp oil and CBD therapeutics can contain no more than 0.03% THC.
  • The amount of THC in legal CBD therapeutics is not potent enough to have a sedative or psychoactive effect on users.
  • Most CBD users report that Cannabidiol actually works to boost physical energy levels, a well as increase mental focus.

Because CBD oil does not contain THC, CBD therapeutics lack the sedative side-effects of illicit cannabis. However, CBD oil may be able to improve sleep quality when taken in high doses.

How Can Hemp Oil Make You Sleepy?

To be clear, if you plan to use low dose CBD oil to relieve pain, inflammation, or anxiety throughout the day, it is unlikely that you will experience any kind of sedative effect. However, it does seem to be the case that Cannabidiol can be used in the evening to help relieve insomnia and improve sleep quality.

Saying that CBD does not induce sedative effects, but can improve sleep can seem somewhat contradictory. However, this claim is supported by a 2008 study by Antonio Waldo Zuardi.

  • Zuardi discovered that whereas high doses of CBD may be able to induce sleepiness, low doses have an opposite, energizing effect.
  • 2006 studies on rodents found that while CBD seems to promote better rest in the evening, using CBD through the day seems to promote increased energy.

CBD and the Science of Sleep

At present, how Cannabidiol might be able to promote wakefulness during the day, but better rest in the evening isn’t fully understood.

What we do know is that CBD itself does not induce sedation. Instead, some researchers believe that CBD improves sleep quality by alleviating anxiety. The anti-inflammatory proprieties of CBD may also help people rest, by aiding bodily relaxation.

A 2006 study published in Life Sciences, also found that terpenes like  Linalool in full-spectrum CBD may play a role in increasing levels of the sleep hormone adenosine.

Will Hemp Oil Make You Sleepy During the Day

As we have hopefully made clear, the chances of Cannabidiol making users drowsy during the day are small. This means that CBD can be used safely at work or when being physically active. However, for extra peace of mind, people using CBD for the first time may want to experiment with smaller dosages.

Alternatively, if you are looking to improve sleep quality, it may be worth using higher strength, full-spectrum CBD just before bedtime.
