Does CBD Oil Help with Tinnitus?

CBD has an extensive range of applications with immense potential we are still in the process of understanding. In this article, we will cover what we currently know about CBD and tinnitus.

If you are unfamiliar with the issue or CBD’s role in treating hearing-related conditions, we will cover everything you need to know.

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is when you hear an internal noise ringing in one or both ears. According to the Mayo Clinic, “tinnitus is usually caused by an underlying condition, such as age-related hearing loss, an ear injury or a problem with the circulatory system.”

How Many People are Affected by Tinnitus?

While the condition typically affects older adults, Tinnitus is reported to be experienced in over 50 million Americans. Almost half of the cases are chronic, and unfortunately, nearly 5 million Americans experience extreme and debilitating symptoms.

Symptoms and Causes of Tinnitus

As you can imagine, an uncontrollable ringing in your ears can dramatically affect your quality of life. People suffering from the condition have reported it leading to fatigue, depression, anxiety, and memory and concentration issues.

Tinnitus is typically caused by an underlying condition such as:

  • Hearing loss
  • Exposure to loud noises
  • Earwax build-up
  • Bone growth in the ear
  • Meniere’s disease
  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Head or neck injuries
  • Tumor in the cranial nerve

Most doctors recommend finding the underlying cause of Tinnitus as a treatment. Once addressed, the condition tends to be more manageable; however, identifying the cause can be challenging.

Current Treatments for Tinnitus

While tinnitus isn’t a life-threatening condition, it can make simple tasks unmanageable. Unfortunately, there isn’t a prescription or over-the-counter cure for tinnitus.

The Mayo Clinic recommends using distracting noises such as a fan, low-volume radio static, or soft music to drown out the ringing. They also suggest exercising, relaxation, and biofeedback to identify or ease any underlying conditions.

If you are suffering from tinnitus, playing noise to combat the internal ringing isn’t exactly an ideal solution. As a result, more and more people are turning to CBD for natural treatment.

CBD for Tinnitus

Experts believe that CBD could relieve tinnitus directly by reducing inflammation and by treating stress, one of the most common underlying conditions associated with tinnitus.

Unfortunately, we still need more scientific research looking into how CBD affects the condition directly before doctors will begin recommending the possible treatment. Below are where we are at with each mechanism of relief.

Combating Stress

CBD has been linked with reducing anxiety and depression and is supported by actual data. One of the most promising studies was done in 2019 by researchers from the University of Colorado. After only 1 month of daily CBD use, 80% of anxiety scores decreased.

Using CBD to reduce anxiety is still not approved by the FDA, but we expect more studies to support the popular treatment.

Reducing Inflammation

Inflammation is another condition commonly treated with CBD. According to Medical News Today, “there have not been many studies into how CBD affects inflammation in humans, but researchers have found evidence to suggest that CBD reduces inflammation and pain in animals.”

Like anxiety, we still need more research to back up the claim, but access to CBD is still relatively new, and researchers are still catching up with the overwhelming number of anecdotal accounts.

Does CBD Treat Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a complex condition with many possible causes. While CBD may help someone suffering from the ailment due to anxiety, an underlying condition like damage to the eardrum from exposure to loud noises may not be treatable with CBD.

If you are suffering from tinnitus and seek treatment, we recommend purchasing premium CBD from a reputable retailer that provides customers with complete transparency.
